Babinda Falls are located 65km south from Cairns, to get there follow the Bruce Highway to Babinda, turn off here and follow the road to the Babinda Boulders the way to Babinda Boulders is well signed.
Start of the track
To get on the main track, walk 450m along the Goldfield Trail from the playground on the left there will be a very small opening follow this to the creek where you will then have to cross, its about 1.5m deep at its deepest point. Once across there will be a dried up creek bed follow this and you should start to see pink ribbon directing the way you will then be able to follow this all the way to the Babinda Falls.
Path to Babinda Falls |
Alternatively you can do what I did walk to the waters edge where the devils pool walk starts you will be able to see a stream that runs all the way down (red line in picture). Cross the Babinda Creek and follow the stream down, you will have to physically swim as it is deep in parts and you wont be able to walk across. If you have anything that can get wet I advise not to take it at all if your going this route or make sure its in a waterproof bag/pouch. It is about a 200m swim before it is shallow enough to walk again. As you can see following this path you will meet back up with the guided pink ribbon path until this point though you will be in the water ranging from ankle deep to your chest in places.
The guided pink ribbon path is approximately 3.2km long, the walk is easy and generally flat for most of it, there are certain parts that are very steep. Along the path keep an eye out for spiders, lizards and other animals to be found, you will be countlessly walking through spiders webs just as a heads up. I rate the path as easy and most should be able to walk it, it took me an hour to walk and that was at a generally slow pace. Along the way there are countless places to stop along the river go for a swim, fill up water bottles or even take pictures.
Once about 300m away from the waterfall you just walk along the rocks there, along here are many nice rock pools to return to and swim at. Once at the big falls there is a big open swimming area and plenty of shade around on the rocks to relax at. If you have brought blow up rafts or mattresses you can walk up the waterfall and ride them down into the water below. Alternatively a rope swing has been rigged up for others to enjoy by @lifelongweekend.
The waterfall doesn't stop there, if you walk all the way up these falls, which are very steep and can be slippery so watch your footing on the way up you will be blessed with absolute magical waterfall at the very top nestled away into the mountain. This is by far one of the nicest hidden waterfalls I have seen in Far North Queensland.
