Tumoulin State Forest

Tumoulin State Forest is about a 2 hour drive from Cairns and is located next to Ravenshoe there are three entries into the park. The easiest way to get to Tumoulin State Forest is to drive to Atherton and head south along the Kennedy Highway. Heading along the highway you will see Smith Road on the right hand side, this is one of the entries to the park and I believe the easiest way to get to the falls. A 4WD is needed to reach the falls, the state forest also allows dirt bikes.

The track isn't rough and even the city 4WD will be able to make it, the worst part of the track is generally all the rubble of rocks at certain points along the track. After some rain the track is quiet slippery and the water generally hangs around on the road, there are no deep bog holes along the way but some you will need slow down for.

Throughout the forest there is an abundance of places you are able to pull off the track and camp on the side in open grassy areas. There are many tracks that turn off from the main dirt road to get to the falls. The easiest way to get to the falls I believe is to just stay on smith road and don't turn off anywhere along the way, at one point the road will curve around to the left don't go left but follow the track that goes straight ahead. Once past this point there should only be two places you are able to turn off to the left if you come to a creek crossing you have gone to far, you can take either of these tracks to the left and it will lead you to an area with a small turn around point where you will also be able to see a small walking track that will take you down the falls the walk is under 100m.

Down by the falls there are plenty of places to walk around, swim & go for a quick fish. You can also walk up the other side of the gorge giving great views over the falls and across the landscape.
