Stoney Creek

Stoney Creek is close enough for any Cairns local looking for a place to swim. If heading south past Lake Placid the first right just after the Barron River Bridge will take you down all the way down to Stony Creek the start of the Glacier Rock track also starts from this location. You are able to follow the creek all the way to the large falls at the end which are also passed by the Kuranda Train.

Walking along the creek are many rock pools and waterfalls which you are able to swim in. The distance from the start of the creek to the waterfalls at the very end is about 2.3km, and shouldnt take longer than 1.5hrs to get to. You should be aware of snakes along the way as I almost stood on a Taipan, if it has been raining the rocks will be very slippery, as a lot is also covered by leaf foliage.

To return you can either walk back the way you came or if looking at the waterfall walk up the left hand side next to the bridge to the train track. Once on the train track walk back across the bridge and continue to head this way. Beware this track is used by the Kuranda train mentioned before, and walking along the track is actually prohibited if not part of authorised personnel. There is a tunnel on the way back around 100m long so if its getting dark you may struggle to see along the railway track in the tunnel. Following the track you will come to where there is a metal bridge that passes over the train track head up the right hand side where you will then be able to walk back down following the Glacier Rock trail.
